The National Black Cultural Information Trust’s Freedom Culture 250 Experience

     

The National Black Cultural Information Trust, Inc. (NBCI Trust) has announced the launch of Freedom Culture 250: Commemorating 250 Years of African American Reparative Justice, a 2026 cultural and public education initiative exploring Black history, freedom movements, cultural memory, and reparative justice during America’s semiquincentennial.

The initiative will feature cultural activations, educational events, theatrical experiences, and community gatherings across Maryland and Washington, DC.

Planned events include:

  • The “We The People” 250th Block Party and Living Legacy: 250 Years of Culture Pop-Up Experience in Prince George’s County, Maryland
  • A special presentation of Purlie Victorious by playwright Ossie Davis at Studio Theatre in Washington, DC, followed by a community talkback featuring J.A.M. Aiwuyor and Nkechi Taifa, Esq.
  • Juneteenth Celebration at National Harbor, Maryland
  • Special July 4th weekend activations to be announced
  • The 4th Annual African American Cultural Expo and Children’s Book Fair in Charles County, Maryland

“Freedom Culture 250 is an opportunity to center African American history, cultural survival, and the continuing pursuit of reparative justice within the broader story of America’s 250th anniversary,” said Jessica Ann Mitchell Aiwuyor, founder and executive director of NBCI Trust.

The initiative builds upon NBCI Trust’s ongoing work in cultural communications, media, education, storytelling, and reparative justice engagement.
