“The Hidden Black Society They Don’t Teach You About” explores overlooked aspects of Black history, focusing on influential Black communities and individuals whose stories are often excluded from mainstream education. Maroon communities were formed by formerly enslaved Africans who escaped from plantations and established independent settlements in the Americas. These groups played a vital role in resisting colonial oppression and preserving African cultural traditions. In the Great Dismal there were 3 types of marron groups the interior maroons, the fringe maroons, and the canal maroons.
